Sadie's Recovery

We decided to schedule Sadie's surgery before Labor Day weekend so she could have a long, calm weekend to recover.  It would also be beneficial that Harris could carry her around the house if needed.  

 So we dropped her off the morning of Thursday, August 30 for her surgery.  The vet called a little after noon and said that it went well and that she was resting comfortably.  We picked her up on Friday and she was thrilled to see us.

 Nurse Clayton has been taking great care of her sister.  She wipes her head with wipes, makes sure her food and water are RIGHT under her nose, and says "ooowwww" when pointing to her big incision.  

Sadie is on many medications and I have been applying cold and warm compresses as well as doing some physical therapy to begin the healing process.

She is under strict confinement for the first two weeks and limited confinement for the next four weeks.  We will begin letting her swim and hope that will be the ultimate way to rehabilitate her leg.  Slowly but surely we will have her fully mobile again.

 

Many thanks to everyone who sent their well wishes as Sadie recovers.  We really appreciate it.  It's never easy to have an injured child.

Sadie's 8th Birthday

 Someone (not naming names) decided they wanted to take a few knibbles off Sadie's cake before we celebrated.  There was a "d" and it did have an "8" on it.

We celebrated with ice cream and Sadie had cake.

 Sadie typically gets new tennis balls and a 'squirrel' (her favorite kind of frisbee) for her birthday.  But since she hurt her leg, she got 3 new bones.

Clayton and I have been gone from Tupelo for awhile traveling to Memphis, Baton Rouge, back to Memphis, Oxford, Memphis.  Harris says Sadie won't eat her breakfast and sits by the window at night waiting for us to come home.

I suggested to Harris that he play ball with her and maybe it would cheer her up.  Well, the second time he threw the ball, she went to get it and started limping.  We hoped it was just pulled and waited over the weekend to see if it got any better.  Nope, so off to the vet went on Monday afternoon.

Sadie hates the vet and was nervous.  The doctor examined her and instantly said that it looks like she ruptured her cranial cruciate ligament in her right knee (tore her ACL).  Previously she had hip surgery but I couldn't remember what leg it was and thought it was her right while Harris said it was her left.  So our vet agreed that it was best to make sure that she didn't hurt it as well.  

 She did an x-ray to confirm that it was her left hip but her hip thankfully isn't hurt.  She gave her a light sedative but any sedative knocks her out.  She said that she would need surgery but doesn't perform orthopedic surgeries herself and recommended vets to contact.

For now she has anti-inflammatory and pain medicine to give me a little bit of time to research.  Apparently, ACL injuries in dogs are quite common.

 After much research about the types of ACL repair procedures and calling countless vets in numerous cities, we went to a consultation with a vet in Tupelo who we scheduled to perform the surgery next Thursday.

It will be many weeks and months of recovery, but we are confident (with our fingers and toes crossed) that Sadie will return to her ball-loving self very soon.
